SBTi Target Setting

The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

The SBTi provides a framework for companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets aligned with the latest climate science and the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C. SBTi target setting helps businesses establish credible, measurable, and time-bound goals to mitigate their climate impact. It is done to demonstrate a company’s commitment to climate action, align with regulatory and stakeholder expectations, and contribute to global climate goals.

After committing to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an organization first assesses its current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Based on this data, the organization sets science-based emission reduction targets that align with the global climate goals, such as limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C or 2°C. These targets are then submitted to the SBTi for validation to ensure they meet the required scientific criteria.

Once validated, the organization develops an action plan with specific initiatives, such as energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy adoption, and supply chain emissions reductions. The organization implements these actions while continuously monitoring progress. Regular reporting on progress, typically done annually through sustainability reports, helps communicate achievements and challenges.

The organization reviews its targets and actions periodically to ensure continued alignment with the latest scientific insights and adjusts strategies as necessary. This process ensures that the organization actively contributes to global climate efforts and demonstrates leadership in sustainability.
